  • Medical marijuana could reduce need for other drugs

    Dec 3, 2015

ST. PAUL -- Severe pain soon will be a reason Minnesotans may use medical marijuana, something supporters say will reduce the need for powerful and often-dangerous prescription medicines. State Health Commissioner Ed Ehlinger Wednesday announced he will add intractable pain to nine specific conditions that qualify for using pills, vapors and oil made from the marijuana plant. Smoking it is not allowed under state law. Those who favor Ehlinger's move say the marijuana products could result in less use of drugs such as hydrocodone, oxycodone and...

  • ACLU Stands with Planned Parenthood Against Violence and Congressional Defunding Measures

    Dec 3, 2015

NEW YORK – This week, the U.S. Senate is considering a budget reconciliation bill that includes language to defund Planned Parenthood, a measure that would restrict access to critical reproductive health care for men and women nationwide. This effort immediately follows the violent attack at a Planned Parenthood health center in Colorado Springs last week, where a gunman opened fire and murdered a police officer and two civilians, while injuring nine more. In the days after the shooting, every other Planned Parenthood center in the state and c...

  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Let courtroom flags serve as a constant reminder

    Dec 3, 2015

We applaud the district court for accepting the flags of the Leech Lake Band and Red Lake Nation into the Beltrami County Courtrooms. Census figures show that American Indians represent approximately 21 percent of the population in Beltrami County, many of whom are members of the Leech Lake Band and Red Lake Nation. The symbolism of this measure is an important step toward achieving justice for Native people in the court system. However, if this is viewed as the culmination of a process rather than a beginning, racial justice will remain an...

  • Police clearing Fourth Precinct protest site affter neighbors bring frustrations to City Hall

    Dec 3, 2015

Police began clearing the encampment outside Minneapolis’ Fourth Precinct police station on Plymouth Avenue early Thursday morning as about 50 protesters stood by. On Wednesday, neighborhood frustrations with the protest site spilled into an impromptu City Hall hearing and police separately said the protests likely played a role in slower recent response times. A handful of neighbors upset about noise, vandalism and blocked streets vented concerns to the City Council’s public safety committee Wednesday, the first time the council has inv...

  • Minnesota nears slipping below 50 percent married rate

    Dec 3, 2015

Minnesota is only months away from a historic turning point that it has been sliding toward for decades: the moment when fewer than half of the state’s adults are married. The gradual erosion has less to do with a rejection of marriage than with economics, changing lifestyles and an aging population. “Ninety percent of Americans marry by age 45,” said state demographer Susan Brower. “It’s nothing to do with the institution of marriage. It’s an age thing, including the growth in seniors, who are likelier to be widowed.” http://www.st...

  • Dakota County employee charged for sharing data on Mack, Kelly

    Dec 3, 2015

A prosecutor alleges a Dakota County employee violated state privacy laws when he forwarded a confidential work e-mail to his home — a message that gave identifying details of two lawmakers who were cited after a park ranger found them “making out” in a parked car in Eagan. Thomas Berry, 45, was one of 33 employees who received via e-mail an Aug. 26 report that detailed the “parks activity.” It included nine incidents and five names and other details such as dates of birth and addresses. The new complaint does not name those included in the in...

  • Education Minnesota pushes for schools that serve as community hubs

    Dec 3, 2015

Life at schools in Brooklyn Center isn’t just about the students in classrooms. Instead, the district throws open its doors for the community, offering resource rooms for families, after-school youth programs and health care services. This new way of looking at schools — as community hubs — is leading to higher graduation rates and fewer student absences, school officials say. “The whole vision of community schools is that schools are open all day, every day,” said Patrice Howard, director of community schools and partnerships with the Brook...

  • Minnesota to allow pain patients into pot program

    Dec 3, 2015

Minnesota will open its medical marijuana program to pain patients, starting next summer. The move, announced Wednesday by Health Commissioner Ed Ehlinger, could bring thousands of new patients into a program that has struggled with low enrollment and high prices. Ehlinger, however, said his decision was driven not by economic or scientific data but by compassion for pain-wracked Minnesotans who hope cannabis will give them some relief when every other pain treatment has failed. “I knew the decision was not just about medicine and objective s...
