ST. PAUL -- Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton knows his $1.4 billion public works project plan cannot happen as proposed. "It's like pushing a boulder uphill," he said Friday in announcing his proposal, one of the largest such requests in history and a big target for Republicans who prefer spending much less. Knowing the opposition he faces, he began a campaign for the measure saying this is a good time to borrow money, through the state selling bonds. "Today is the day we talk about investing in the...
RED LAKE INDIAN RESERVATION, Minn.-Let's get one thing straight here right off the bat about this early January fishing excursion: We'd picked the coldest day of a mostly wimpy winter to try our luck for rainbow trout and brook trout on the Red Lake Indian Reservation. The temperature last Saturday morning flirted with 15 below zero, and the brisk northwest wind made it feel even colder. No matter, that. We'd be fishing in the heated comfort of portable shelters, and the trout in these small...
The land was worth little. Robert Treuer bought it - 200 acres of barren, abandoned farmland near Bemidji - in 1958 for about $2,000. He planted a tree farm on it, which became a forest of towering pines and a home to snow buntings, evening grosbeaks, deer. It became Treuer's home, too. It inspired his writing, including his first book, "The Tree Farm," and hundreds of columns, some of which appeared in the Star Tribune. It connected him with the nearby American Indian tribes. It captivated his...
