A 22-year-old Red Lake man was sentenced Wednesday for sexually abusing a minor female while on the Red Lake Indian Reservation. In Duluth, U.S. District Court Chief Judge Michael J. Davis sentenced Byron Keith Kingbird, Jr., to three years in prison for sexual abuse of a minor. Kingbird pleaded guilty last Sept. 8 and admitted that he assaulted the girl, whose was between the age of 12 and 16, in January 2009. Bemidji police are investigating a man who was found dead in a drainage ditch outside the Sanford Center at 4:51 p.m. Tuesday. Police Chief Mike Mastin said the cause of death is not known at this time and will not be until results from the autopsy, which is scheduled for Thursday, are released. The autopsy is expected to be handled by a doctor from Sanford Bemidji Medical Center. Mastin said it is likely a toxicology test will be part of the autopsy.
