BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Speedway opened its 2015 season Sunday with a full day of events. Monday’s races were cancelled due to rain in the area. A total of 116 cars flooded the pits for the season opener. The grandstands were filled with excited fans, young and old, and it didn’t take long for the action to start, with two rollovers, a fire and plenty of “fireworks.” The show featured nine classes of cars on the quarter mile high banked oval. Track conditions were “fantastic” according to the drivers: smooth and very fast. http://www.be...
PRINSBURG, Minn. – Truck traffic through the Farmers Co-op’s feed mill here is about half of normal these days. The co-op just doesn’t need as much grain to mix into feed. The 130,000-plus birds at its nearby turkey farms are dead. This is ground zero for the bird flu that’s devastating Minnesota’s turkey industry and threatening the state’s rural economy. Kandiyohi County is the largest turkey producer in the nation’s biggest turkey-producing state, and the county seat of Willmar is home to turkey giant Jennie-O. http://www.st...
NEW YORK — Charter Communications will spend $55.33 billion to acquire Time Warner Cable in a cash-and-stock deal that would instantly create one of the largest pay-television and broadband operators in the U.S. As part of the agreement, Charter will also buy Bright House Networks for more than $10 billion. Charter will provide $100 in cash and shares of a new public parent company equal to 0.5409 shares of Charter for each outstanding Time Warner Cable Inc. share. The transaction values each Time Warner Cable share at about $195.71. h...
The Minneapolis and Robbinsdale school districts are forging ahead with plans for the FAIR School even though legislators failed to pass a measure that would formally transfer management of the fine-arts magnet school. The agreement was a casualty of the session ending without the Legislature approving the bonding bill, which contained a proposal to transfer management of the FAIR (Fine Arts Interdisciplinary Resource) School. http://www.startribune.com/fair-school-west-metro-program-move-ahead-with-transitions/304943391/...
DETROIT — The death toll from faulty ignition switches in small cars made by General Motors has reached 107. Victims' families are being offered compensation of at least $1 million each by attorney Kenneth Feinberg, who was hired by GM last year. In addition, GM has agreed to make offers to 199 people who were injured in crashes caused by the switches in the Chevrolet Cobalt and other older-model cars. http://www.startribune.com/death-toll-from-defective-gm-ignition-switches-rises-to-107/304938701/...
WASHINGTON — A Supreme Court ruling due in a few weeks could wipe out health insurance for millions of people covered by President Barack Obama's health care law. But it's Republicans — not White House officials — who have been talking about damage control. A likely reason: Twenty-six of the 34 states that would be most affected by the ruling have Republican governors, and 22 of the 24 GOP Senate seats up in 2016 are in those states. http://www.startribune.com/ugly-potential-fallout-from-supreme-court-health-care-case/304894...
ARLINGTON, Va. — President Barack Obama on Monday saluted Americans who died in battle, saying the country must "never stop trying to fully repay them" for their sacrifices. He noted it was the first Memorial Day in 14 years without U.S. forces engaged in a major ground war. Speaking under sunny skies to some 5,000 people in an amphitheater on the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, Obama said the graveyard is "more than a final resting place of heroes." http://www.startribune.com/obama-pays-tribute-to-fallen-se...
