Brian Douglas Child, Waabishkaanakwad – “White Cloud,” 62, of Redby, MN passed away from a recent illness on Friday, July 27, 2018 at his home in Redby, MN.

Traditional funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at the Red Lake Humanities Building in Red Lake, MN with Spiritual Leader Lee Staples officiating. A wake will begin at 7:00 pm, Monday, July 30, 2018, at the Red Lake Humanities Building and will continue until the time of the service. Interment will be at the Redby Community Cemetery in Redby, MN. Arrangements are with the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji.

He was born on October 8, 1955 in Rock Island, Illinois, the son of Vernon D. and Florence (Auginash) Child. He attended school in Matherville, Illinois and graduated from Sherrard high school in 1973. In school, he played tri-county league baseball, was an exceptional left-handed pitcher, and during his senior year his team went undefeated with a record of 21-0. Brian pitched three-quarters of the games. After high school, he worked in manufacturing for International Harvester, before returning home to the Red Lake Reservation. Brian worked as an over the road truck driver, visiting every land state and province in the United States and Canada. For many years, he lived part-time in Saint Paul Minnesota as a devoted caregiver to his nephew, Frankie, who has Muscular Dystrophy. He had an especially close relationship with his nephew and niece, Frankie and Benay, and was very proud of his sister, Brenda Child who is a writer and Professor of American Indian history at the University of Minnesota-Twin-Cities. He enjoyed seeing Frankie graduate from Augsburg College in May 2017. Frankie’s graduation gift was a trip to Busch Stadium in St. Louis to see the Cardinals play. Brian was a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, an enthusiasm that he inherited from his father, who was from downstate Illinois. He is survived by his sister, Brenda Child (Steven Premo) of Saint Paul and Bemidji, his niece and nephew, Frankie and Benay, his Child cousins in Illinois, and the Auginash family of the Red Lake Nation.
