Omaha teenager provides books, inspiration for Red Lake Indian Reservation

OMAHA, Neb. -Amanda Cardey wanted one thing: books.

The teenage book lover doesn't plan to read them -- they're for children at the Red Lake Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota.

"There's kids there that love reading, but there's no books for them to read," said Cardey.

In July Cardey traveled with other Omaha teenagers from Saint Andrews United Methodist Church on a volunteer trip to the reservation.

"Talking to some of the girls who live on the reservation, talking about how much they love to read but there is nothing left for them to read at the school because they've read everything," said Cardey.

That was the moment she decided to do something. She called friends, and relatives and hung up posters asking for donations.

"I figured she do something with it, but I did not expect this," said Lynn Cardey, Amanda's mother.

"I've loved books since I was little, so I thought it would be nice for kids," said Amanda Cardey. "As a single person sometimes you feel like you can't do something, you can't change somebody's life or you can't change the world, but really if you apply yourself you can make a huge impact."
