  • As deadline looms, a hostile mood grips south Minneapolis homeless camp

    Dec 7, 2018

Just a week before authorities plan to relocate people living inside a large homeless encampment in south Minneapolis, humanitarian aid workers who are vital to the effort say the camp’s atmosphere has turned so ugly that they are afraid to set foot there. In the past week, nonprofit outreach workers have complained of being harassed and forced from the camp by volunteers associated with Natives Against Heroin (NAH), a street outreach group that has been providing security and donations for people there. Two homeless men left their tents and f...

  • Dayton: Budgets Went From Shambles To Surpluses

    Josh Peterson, Lakeland News|Dec 7, 2018

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Outgoing Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton says the state’s projected $1.5 billion budget surplus contrasts with the “shambles” he faced when he took office nearly eight years ago. Speaking to reporters Thursday, the retiring Democrat recalled that he faced a $6.2 billion budget deficit and that the state had virtually no financial reserves. But he says the state will now have $2 billion in reserves to guard against future downturns. Dayton says the main reason for the turnaround is that Minnesota employers have added over 31...

  • In reversal, judge allows Friday vote on Minneapolis 2040 plan

    Dec 7, 2018

The Minneapolis City Council is once again poised to approve its 2040 comprehensive plan on Friday, after a judge denied an opposition group’s request to stop it. The Thursday afternoon decision by Hennepin County District Judge Joseph R. Klein means the vote to submit the city’s development blueprint is going on as scheduled Friday. Klein had initially blocked the council’s vote Thursday morning, saying he needed up to seven days to make a decision on the lawsuit. His final order was filed hours later. http://www.startribun...

  • Hennepin County Board agrees to reduce Sheriff Office budget by $1.3 million

    Dec 7, 2018

Nobody can accuse the Hennepin County Board of not taking its budget authority seriously. The seven commissioners spent 30 minutes Thursday in spirited debate over a proposed $1.9 million reduction in the Sheriff Office’s 2019 budget. In the end they agreed to cut the same amount out of the budget, but spread out the reduction among the Sheriff’s Office, the County Attorney’s Office and the Community Corrections Department. http://www.startribune.com/hennepin-county-board-votes-to-reduce-sheriff-office-budget-by-1-3-million/...

    Dec 7, 2018

Before reporting to the United States' diplomatic mission to Somalia last month, new U.S. Ambassador Donald Yamamoto paid a visit to members of Minnesota's vast diasporic community. Yamamoto's dialogue here has since taken on new meaning for Somali-Americans in Minnesota — home to the nation's largest Somali community — with news this week that the State Department is re-establishing a "permanent diplomatic presence" in the country for the first time in more than a quarter-century. http://www.startribune.com/expectations-hig...

  • Appeals to Scott Walker: Don't stain legacy, veto bills

    Dec 7, 2018

MADISON, Wis. — A bipartisan group of political figures appealed to Gov. Scott Walker to avoid staining his legacy and behaving like a sore loser by signing legislation that would weaken the powers of the Democrat who defeated him. Rather than notching another partisan victory in his final weeks in office, they said, Walker should think bigger. Think of your recently deceased father, they pleaded. Think of former President George H.W. Bush. Think of Christ. http://www.startribune.com/democrat-says-he-ll-appeal-to-walker-to-v...

  • Wisconsin Tribes Fight Tax on Reservation Land

    Dec 7, 2018

MADISON, Wis. (CN) – Four Chippewa tribes in northern Wisconsin filed a federal lawsuit against Governor Scott Walker and other officials over the state’s attempts to collect property taxes on reservation lands acquired through an 1854 treaty. The complaint, filed Friday in Madison federal court, says it is in response to state officials’ efforts “to assess, collect and enforce taxes under Chapter 70 of the Wisconsin Statutes upon properties owned in fee simple by the tribes and their members” within the boundaries of their respectiv...

  • Staff Email Addresses Removed From District Websites to Improve Cybersecurity

    Dec 7, 2018

Citing growing concerns about phishing scams and potential hacks of their computer networks, some school district technology leaders have decided to remove staff email addresses from their official websites, a move that some experts warn could frustrate parents. Since early November, scrolling through Campbell County Public Schools' website would no longer reveal any staff email addresses. Instead, there are just phone numbers and a generic email for the webmaster. http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/DigitalEducation/2018/12/virg...

  • A Toy Gun, a Snapchat Post, and an Arrest

    Dec 7, 2018

Zach Cassidento sat in the passenger seat of a police car as it drove up the steep driveway to his modest two-story home in Bethany, Connecticut, and parked outside. Officers headed to Zach’s bedroom on the lower level, a cluttered space emblematic of an angsty American teenager: neglected scooters and skateboards, a poster for the heavy metal band Five Finger Death Punch, and two computers set up for his favorite game — the first-person shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. https://www.the74million.org/article/a-toy-gun...
