    Sep 4, 2018

Getting kids up, dressed, fed and out the door can be a herculean undertaking, especially when adjusting to a new fall routine. My father had to resort to using a vacuum cleaner to roust me out of bed when I was a teenager. • Harvard did not consider Elizabeth Warren as Native American

    Sep 4, 2018

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts — Harvard University’s decision to hire Elizabeth Warren as a law professor in the 1990s was not based on any assertion that she has Native American heritage, according to a report by the Boston Globe. The newspaper reports that interviews and documents show the issue was not considered by Harvard Law faculty or those who admitted the now U.S. senator from Massachusetts to law school at Rutgers or to jobs at the University of Houston, the University of Texas and the University of Pennsylvania. https:...

  • 1918 Fires: Reservation burns, but Ojibwe benefit from history with fire

    Sep 4, 2018

The story of the 1918 fires and Fond du Lac is remarkable for what didn't happen on the reservation as the fires raged across the largely rural area between Brookston and Cloquet. • The Attack on Labor Itself Begins Tuesday

    Sep 4, 2018

Monday is Labor Day and, on Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee will begin hearings into the nomination and inevitable confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to a lifetime position on the Supreme Court of the United States. Much of the attention— rightly—will be drawn to Kavanaugh's dreadful history on reproductive rights, as well as to whatever is stashed away in the 100,000 documents that the administration* is keeping buried regarding what Kavanaugh did during the torture years under President George W. Bush. But it shouldn't be overlooked tha...

  • Finding the Words for Indian Country

    Sep 4, 2018

My focus on Native subject matter started in the late 1990s, when I was deputy editor of Garden Design magazine. As part of an effort to offer readers more environmental coverage, I assigned a writer to report the story of a guitar owned by music star Rosanne Cash. The Gibson guitar company had made the instrument from sustainably logged wood provided by the Menominee Tribe’s timber-products firm. Before asking the writer to trace the guitar back to its origins in the Wisconsin forest, I did the due diligence any editor engages in when a...

    Sep 4, 2018

A record number of grizzly bears are being killed by cars as they roam the roads in and around Glacier National Park in northwestern Montana. At the same time, they're causing an unprecedented amount of damage to crops and livestock. The grizzly population in this area, known as the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem, is growing at about 2.3 percent a year. Bear biologists estimate there are more than 1,000 bears here, inhabiting an 8-million-acre swath of land encompassing Glacier National Park and numerous national forests. It is the...

    Sep 4, 2018

CLARKFIELD, MINN. – Thanks to federal taxpayers, the 800 or so residents of this southwest Minnesota town can look forward to the day when they won’t have to tap their faucets in the winter to keep the city water tower from freezing up. Clarkfield scored near the top this year in the annual distribution of Small Cities Development Program grants, which are given out by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through the state to help rehabilitate housing for low- to moderate-income people, mitigate blight and slums and era...
