  • Red Lake, other tribes alarmed by Trump's proposed cuts to BIA programs

    Maya Rao, Star Tribune|Jul 4, 2017

WASHINGTON - The last few years have seen the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians reopen a juvenile justice facility that sat empty for a decade, establish a "last chance" school for students on the verge of expulsion, and raise the number of youth screenings for mental health problems, drug addiction and domestic abuse. Leaders of this northern Minnesota band credit these measures for a 16-month stretch with no suicides among its youth, bucking a persistent crisis that has plagued Indian reservat...

  • Trump tells China that U.S. is ready to act alone against North Korea

    Jul 4, 2017

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump, frustrated by China's unwillingness to lean on North Korea, has told the Chinese leader that the United States is prepared to act on its own in pressuring the nuclear-armed government in Pyongyang, according to senior administration officials. Trump's warning, delivered in a cordial but blunt phone call on Sunday night to President Xi Jinping, came after a flurry of actions by the United States — selling weapons to Taiwan, threatening trade sanctions and branding China for human trafficking — that rankl...

  • N. Korea launches possibly most successful missile test yet

    Jul 4, 2017

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea conducted what may be its most successful missile test yet on Tuesday, firing an intermediate-range weapon that could be powerful enough to reach Alaska. It's Pyongyang's latest step in a push for nuclear weapons capable of hitting any part of the United States. While some details are still unclear, the launch seems designed to send a political warning to Washington and its chief Asian allies, Seoul and Tokyo, even as it allows North Korean scientists a chance to perfect their still-incomplete nuclear missile p...

  • Use of tax credits to build low-income housing reinforces racial fault lines

    Jul 4, 2017

HOUSTON – A mural on the wall of an elementary school here proclaimed, “All the world is all of us,” but the hundreds of people packing the auditorium one night were determined to stop a low-income housing project from coming to their upscale neighborhood. The proposed 233-unit building, which was to be funded with federal tax credits, would burden their overcrowded elementary school with new children, many people argued during a lively meeting last year. Some urged the Houston Housing Authority to pursue cheaper sites elsewhere. http:...

  • Trump largely sidesteps the bully pulpit in pushing health care bill

    Jul 4, 2017

With the Republican push to revamp the Affordable Care Act stalled again, even some allies of President Donald Trump question whether he has effectively used the bully pulpit afforded by his office and are increasingly frustrated by distractions of his own making. Trump has spoken out repeatedly during his tenure about the shortcomings of Obamacare, which he brands a "disaster." But he has made relatively little effort to detail for the public why Republican replacement plans — which fare dismally in public opinion polls — would improve on the...
