RED LAKE - Pine River came to town and it was a fairly close game in the first half, with the Warriors leading 38-26. Rob McClain's shot right at the buzzer from half court was denied, although video footage showed the ball left his hand just before the buzzer went off. • The Republican Rush to Gut Education Rules

    Mar 10, 2017

In their ideological rush to slash red tape, congressional Republicans may end up making it harder for states to get money from Washington to turn around failing schools. Sometimes regulations make it easier, not harder, to comply with the law. The law in question is the Every Student Succeeds Act, the successor to President George W. Bush's No Child Left Behind program. The new law is far less hands-on than the old one, leaving almost all big decisions to the states. It focuses mostly on standards for accountability and transparency, and...

    Mar 10, 2017

The West Virginia Board of Education decided, in a voice vote with no nays heard Wednesday, to not label entire schools with A-F grades next school year. The move followed a backlash from teachers unions and other groups to the state’s first public release in November of grades from that overwhelmingly standardized-test-based labeling system. Mar 10, 2017

Texas senators on Wednesday took a giant step toward cracking down on teachers who have sex and inappropriate relationships with students, unanimously approving a bill that, among other things, would make school officials who fail to report such conduct subject to criminal charges. The bill by state Sen. Paul Bettencourt, R-Houston, and co-authored by all 30 senators is an attempt to stop what Bettencourt has called a "statewide plague." It will now go to the House for consideration. http://www.dallasnews.com/news/dallas-isd...

    Mar 10, 2017

The sealed material, which was reviewed by the Washington Post, provides a rare look into the league’s relationship with drugs and how team doctors m...

  • Refugee resettlement costs are up but still a small part of welfare programs

    Mar 10, 2017

Minnesota chips in generously to help refugees adjust to life in the United States, but these costs make up a small fraction of the overall tab for public assistance programs. Data the state compiled for the Star Tribune show that Minnesota spent more than $180 million in state and federal dollars on cash, food and medical assistance for refugees in 2015, the most recent period available. That’s up 15 percent from five years ago but still less than 2 percent of total expenses for these programs. For state-subsidized child care, however, r...

  • Minneapolis considers blocking use of tire rubber on playgrounds, athletic fields

    Mar 10, 2017

The ground-up tire rubber filling playgrounds in Minnesota and across the country is facing fresh scrutiny in Minneapolis amid growing concerns the bouncy surface contains toxic chemicals. On Friday, the Minneapolis City Council will debate whether the city should use whatever leverage it can to discourage the use of tire mulch on playgrounds and athletic fields. • Federal Court Rules Tribe Waited Too Long to Raise Religious Objections to DAPL

    Mar 10, 2017

A federal judge on Tuesday denied a request for a preliminary injunction to block construction of the Dakota Access pipeline (DAPL). The forum was hosted by Puyallup Chairman Bill Sterud and Tribal Council, members present being David Bean, Tim Reynon and Annette Bryan. Mar 10, 2017

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson staked his position on human rights – and by extension on indigenous rights – pretty clearly on March 3 when he failed to deliver the United States’ Annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices in person. Whether intentional or not, Tillerson’s disinterest couldn’t have done much to impress Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, in Washington, D.C. last week to wrap up and report to the United Nations Human Rights Council on her 10 days of meetings with tribal and U.S. government agencies on the impact of extractiv...
