Haaland, 58, had just conducted a brief staff meeting and was sitting in her new office on Capitol Hill as staffers got phones working and solved logistical problems like wrestling a printer through a narrow doorway. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/deb-haaland-j...

  • On The Navajo Nation, 5,000 Workers Dependent On A Federal Paycheck

    Jan 14, 2019

With the partial federal government shutdown dragging on, Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye says Congress should exempt tribes from feeling the effects. Historically, treaties with the U.S. government have guaranteed the Navajo and many other tribes federal financial assistance for health, education and economic development. So the shutdown is having an outsized impact. On the Navajo Nation, half of the tribe is unemployed. But at least 5,000 tribal members rely on paychecks from the federal government. Missing one, which happened for the...

  • Can Congress Void a Tribal Treaty Without Telling Anyone?

    Jan 14, 2019

Herrera v. Wyoming, an Indian treaty-rights case argued in the Supreme Court last Tuesday, revolves around a basic of federal Indian law: No promise to Indian people actually binds the United States. Congress can unilaterally void any treaty or agreement. The only limit on this power so far has been a requirement that Congress say it is doing so. It is not supposed to act by “implication.” Whether that rule holds true will likely depend on the attitudes of the Court’s two newest justices. The formal issue in Herrera is the conviction of a Cro...

    Jan 14, 2019

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) -- A Rapid City woman accused of stabbing a man to death last month pleaded not guilty Friday to second degree murder charges. Prosecutors say Lorraine Swallow stabbed her nephew Tyrell Bull Bear "multiple times" after an altercation on Dec. 8 at a residence on Castle Heights Place.
