  • Can Indiana fend off A-F grades for schools again?

    Nov 29, 2016

Key Indiana leaders are exploring the possibility of giving schools a second year of reprieve from low ISTEP scores. Last year, Indiana had relief from federal accountability requirements that allowed them to keep teacher pay and A-F grades from dropping while students got used to the new exam. This year, the U.S. Department of Education hasn’t provided similar protections. http://www.indystar.com/story/news/education/2016/11/28/second-year-istep-protections/94356764/...

    Nov 29, 2016

Charter schools are likely coming to the Bluegrass State after decades of debate, and the Kentucky Board of Education wants its voice heard when state legislators no doubt take up the contentious topic. For years, charter schools - which are publicly funded but run by private groups - have failed to gain the needed support in Frankfort to become law. Kentucky is one of only a handful of states that don't allow charter schools. But with the recent election shifting control of the Kentucky House to Republicans, the path is now open to usher...

  • Kids who skip school need compassion not courts, Dallas County leaders say

    Nov 29, 2016

Truancy cases have dropped dramatically statewide, but Dallas County officials want even fewer kids to wind up in court for missing class. That means giving school and county authorities more leeway to punish students who are skipping and to excuse those with legitimate medical or personal issues. Tuesday morning Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins and DISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa will outline two dozen recommendations on how state and local officials should address truancy. http://www.dallasnews.com/news/education/2016...

  • Miami-Dade schools make discipline beneficial, not punitive, for students

    Nov 29, 2016

It is quite simple. If children are not in school they cannot learn. There is no substitute for consistent and structured classroom instruction, which is why creating alternatives to outdoor suspension is critical. While teachers, parents and education stakeholders all agree that school discipline and a structured learning environment are fundamental to instruction and classroom management, keeping children who exhibit disruptive behaviors out of school, thus depriving them the opportunity to grow academically, is never an option. According to...
