"This is how it had to be, as disappointing as it was," said Poultry Barn Superintendent and President of the Beltrami County Fair Board Vern Holzhueter regarding the avian influenza outbreak. • Loss of walleye gives rise to old animosities on Lake Mille Lacs

    Jul 31, 2015

ISLE, Minn. – In the bait shops and bars, fishing docks and resorts that make up the world of Mille Lacs fishing, the collapse of the lake’s walleye fishery has inflamed age-old tensions between white sport anglers and local Indian bands who share the lake. • Bird flu vaccine for turkeys could be near

    Jul 31, 2015

WASHINGTON — Federal officials are within a week of knowing whether a vaccine could prevent avian flu in turkeys, a welcome development for Minnesota’s devastated turkey industry. Still, a vaccination wouldn’t be available until spring, too late halt any feared reoccurance of the lethal bird flu this fall. A vaccination also wouldn’t be a cure-all, and it could complicate trade relations with importers of U.S. poultry. http://www.startribune.com/bird-flu-vaccine-for-turkeys-could-be-near/320215961/...

  • Sen. Amy Klobuchar leaning on House to embrace long-term highway funding fix

    Jul 31, 2015

WASHINGTON – The Senate on Thursday approved two cash infusions for the nearly broke Highway Trust Fund, but the fate of the longer six-year plan now lies in the more partisan U.S. House, which has already left town for its August recess. The fund, which is tapped for infrastructure projects all over the country, is now funded through October — which everyone agreed was necessary so states could continue to fund midsummer construction projects. http://www.startribune.com/sen-amy-klobuchar-leaning-on-house-to-embrace-long-ter...
