Not a peep: Birds absent from county fair in effort to prevent spread of avian flu

BEMIDJI -- The Beltrami County Fair has a poultry problem this year because of avian influenza. However, it's not stopping 4-H participants from bringing bird education to the annual event.

"This is how it had to be, as disappointing as it was," said Poultry Barn Superintendent and President of the Beltrami County Fair Board Vern Holzhueter regarding the avian influenza outbreak. "We're number one in turkey production, we can't compromise this huge poultry industry."
