ThreeSixty Journalism Launches Multimedia Storytelling Institute for High School Students This Summer

Future journalists report on one of society’s most pressing needs – healing

ST. PAUL, Minn. (July 10, 2024) — ThreeSixty is launching a new, three-week summer camp, Multimedia Storytelling Institute, that will bring 18 high school reporters to the University of St. Thomas College of Arts and Sciences to launch their reporting careers. The journalism learning opportunity will be held July 8-25 and is supported by a preeminent roster of media experts.

Supported by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, the camp will explore the ongoing legacy of racism in healthcare and how Minnesota communities are working to heal, reclaim well-being, and center culturally based wisdom to create a healthier future.

Student reporting teams will complete written stories for publication, a TV-ready video package, and social media content. Media partners include Star Tribune, Pioneer Press, MinnPost, FOX 9, KARE-11, KSTP-TV, WCCO-TV, Lindsey Seavert Studios and BMA Cable Networks.

"Student journalists will draw on their own lived experiences to report on the importance of collectively healing from trauma and utilizing culturally based wisdom to improve health outcomes,” said Bukata Hayes, Vice President of Racial and Health Equity and Chief Equity Officer and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. At Blue Cross, we want to not only address how racism and oppression adversely impact health but also uplift how communities are working to heal themselves and create a healthy and liberatory future."

Stories will spotlight the African American Babies Coalition, the Birth Justice Collaborative, Indigenous People’s Taskforce, Kente Circle, Native American Community Clinic, and Urban Roots.

“Multimedia Storytelling Institute is the ultimate hands-on learning opportunity for aspiring media makers,” said ThreeSixty Director Kenzie O’Keefe, who joined the program in the fall of 2023. “Getting to work with newsroom pros on stories that will be professionally published while in high school is a big reason there are more than a dozen ThreeSixty program alums working in local newsrooms as professionals. It’s powerful for students, coaches, industry and community to learn from one another.”
