September 17, 1946 ~ July 7, 2024 (age 77)

Leo Leonard “Sonny” Kingbird, Sr., “Bezhigogaabaw” meaning “Stands Alone” of the Eagle Clan and Redby, MN, journeyed to the spirit world unexpectedly with his wife by his side on Sunday, July7th, 2024, from Neilson Place in Bemidji, MN. He was born on September 17, 1946, in Red Lake, MN, the son of Lucille (Stately) and Leo Kingbird.

Leo grew up in Redby, MN and Dora Lake MN. He attended Bigfork HS in Bigfork, MN. Leo joined the Army shortly after he turned 18. He served in Vietnam for a year and was honorably discharged after serving 3 years. He worked in the woods with his father as a logger for several years and retired from Beltrami Electric after working 20 years. He loved going to powwows and dancing. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was the “Keno King” at the casinos. Leo was a skilled athlete starting at a young age. He played many sports including golf, bowling, baseball, fastpitch, and softball. He coached men's teams and a women's team. Leo had 2 Hole-in-ones and his putter was always on fire! Leo was “The man. The myth. The legend!”

Those greeting Leo in the spirit world are his parents, Lucille and Leo; brother, Valerian Kingbird; and sister, Barbara Kingbird.

Those Leo leaves behind to forever cherish his loving memory are his wife, Diana; sons, Leo (Jennifer) Kingbird, Jr. and Michael (Lenore) Kingbird; special daughter, Frances (Genci) Graves-Haloci; brothers, Wayne Kingbird, Gordon (Annabell) Kingbird, Ron (Sharon) Kingbird; sisters, Connie Beaulieu, Valerie (Bob) Weaver, Ruth Kingbird; and 9 grandchildren.

An overnight wake for Leo will begin at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 10th, 2024, and continue until his traditional service at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 11th, 2024, all to be held at the Ponemah Boys and Girls Club in Ponemah, MN. Leo’s Spiritual Advisors are Anton Treuer and Adrian Liberty. Those helping to lay Leo to rest are Willard Kingbird, Daryl Bohn, Giniw Giizhig, Vincent Kingbird, Wayne Kingbird, Clint Hardy, and Ryan Kingbird. Honorary pallbearers are Jeffery Iceman and all of Leo’s Family and Friends. Interment will be in the Family Grounds in Ponemah, MN, with military honors accorded by the Red Lake Honor Guard.
