Beryl is gaining strength and poised to strike Texas coast as a hurricane

Beryl's peak winds are just 4 mph from hurricane strength as the storm approaches the Texas coast from the Gulf of Mexico. The storm, which caused major damage in parts of Grenada, Jamaica and the Yucatán Peninsula, is expected to make landfall in Texas near Matagorda, which is north of Corpus Christi and south of Galveston, around 5 a.m. Monday as a strong Category 1 hurricane, intensifying until it moves inland.

Hurricane-force winds could affect several coastal counties south of Galveston overnight into early Monday morning, the National Weather Service in Houston said. Tropical-storm-force winds are likely around Houston and Galveston.
