Former North Dakota senator to plead guilty to traveling abroad in order to sexually abuse child

FARGO - Former North Dakota Sen. Ray Holmberg will plead guilty to a federal charge that said he traveled to Europe to sexually abuse a child.

The plea agreement that was filed Monday, June 24, said the Republican from Grand Forks will admit in North Dakota U.S. District Court that he traveled between June 24, 2011, and Nov. 1, 2016, to Prague with intent to sexually abuse a minor. Holmberg, 79, signed the plea agreement on June 18.

Prague is in the Czech Republic in central Europe.

The charge carries a maximum punishment of 30 years in prison. The U.S. Attorney's Office in North Dakota and Holmberg's attorney Mark Friese have agreed to a sentencing level on the low end of the federal guidelines.
