Donald Trump and Minnesota Republicans Want to Ban Abortion

Minnesota Republicans have tried and failed to ban abortion 32 times since 2005

SAINT PAUL, MN - Today, Minnesota Republicans gathered in Saint Paul for the Republican State Convention. And on Friday evening, Donald Trump headlined the Republican Lincoln Reagan dinner.

"Since Trump overturned Roe v. Wade, Minnesota has become an island of access to abortion care as Republicans across the country have enacted extreme abortion bans. If Donald Trump and Minnesota Republicans get their way, Minnesota will be the next state to ban abortion," said Marissa Luna, Executive Director of Alliance for a Better Minnesota. "With our reproductive freedoms on the line, it's more important than ever that we tell Minnesota Republicans and Donald Trump to keep their extreme, anti-choice policy agenda out of Minnesota."

As president, Donald Trump was responsible for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which eliminated Americans' constitutional right to abortion, established over 50 years ago, and opened the door for Republicans in states across the country to ban and criminalize access to abortion care.

Since then, fourteen states have enacted near-total or total abortion bans, including Minnesota’s neighbors in North Dakota and South Dakota.

Even though the majority of Minnesotans want to keep abortion safe and legal, Minnesota Republicans voted against a 2023 law protecting and expanding access to abortion care.

Between 2005 and 2022, Minnesota Republicans tried and failed to ban abortion 32 times. During the 2023-2024 Minnesota legislative session, Minnesota Republicans introduced one abortion ban and five abortion restriction bills that were blocked by Minnesota Democrats.

Trump has bragged about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade and promised to take further action to restrict abortion rights if given the opportunity.

Alliance for a Better Minnesota was in Saint Paul for the Republican State Convention and ahead of Trump’s visit to Minnesota with a mobile billboard highlighting that Donald Trump and Minnesota Republicans plan to ban abortion. The organization also ran a geo-fenced Snapchat filter featuring the same message.
