Law enforcement memorial service in Bemidji honors fallen Burnsville officers

BEMIDJI - Members of the community and local law enforcement gathered at the Beltrami County Courthouse Pavilion on Thursday for a memorial service in honor of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty within the past year.

A service is held each year in Bemidji and across the nation to commemorate fallen officers during National Police Week. On Oct. 1, 1962, U.S. President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726, declaring May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day.

"The police officers of America have worked devotedly and selflessly (on) behalf of the people of this nation, regardless of the peril or hazard to themselves," the proclamation read. "These officers have safeguarded the lives and property of their fellow Americans ... these men and women by their patriotic service and their dedicated efforts have earned the gratitude of the republic."
