Niibawisekwe, Karen Sam, age 70, passed away on April 23, 2024. Visitation will begin at 8 PM on Friday, April 26, 2024, at the District 1 Community Center on the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Reservation. A Funeral Ceremony will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at the District 1 Community Center on the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Reservation, with Ombishkebines officiating. Interment will be in the Vineland Burial Grounds. Arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel of Onamia.

Niibawisekwe, Karen Sam was born on September 4, 1953, to Clara (Wind) and Charles Sam Sr.

She loved going to the casino to play slots and traveling. Karen liked to spend her time visiting with her sisters and being with her grandchildren.

Niibawisekwe, Karen Sam is survived by her son, Jayson Sam Sr.; daughters, Nikki Sam and Tiffany Sam; brother, James Sam; sisters, Lorraine Sam, Deanna Sam, Mary Sam; grandchildren, Kali Sam, Jayson Sam Jr., Alicianna Sam, Tianna Sam; and loving relatives, Warren Skinaway, Kinney Sam, Jake Sam, Rhonda Sam, Jana Sam, Dustin Sam, Carmen Weous, Arlene Weous, Allison Jones, Tricia Jones, Derek Greenfeather Jr.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clara (Wind) and Charles Sam Sr.; partner, Clarence Sam Jr.; sisters, Kathleen Littlewolf, Brenda Sam-Nayquonabe, Darlene Sam, Sandra Sam, Judith Sam, Janice Sam; brothers, Charles Sam Jr., Dennis Sam, Kevin Sam, Marlon Sam; and many nieces and nephews.
