Minneapolis Felon Sentenced to Prison for Illegal Possession of a Firearm

MINNEAPOLIS – A Minneapolis man has been sentenced to 46 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release for possessing a firearm as a felon, announced United States Attorney Andrew M. Luger.

According to court documents, on June 18, 2023, Minneapolis police officers responded to a shot spotter activation. At the scene they contacted a male victim "K.H.," who stated that Ramone Trayvil Johnson, 30, attempted to rob him inside of Johnson's vehicle. K.H. stated that he had owed Johnson money for an Xbox and while discussing this, Johnson pulled out a handgun and pointed it at K.H. K.H. was able to get out of the car and run. As he was running, Johnson began shooting at the K.H. and fled the scene on foot. It was later determined that the Johnson used a Zastava, semi-automatic pistol to shoot at K.H., who was not hit. Law enforcement recovered Johnson's driver's license and cell phones from inside his car. Later that evening, Johnson was a passenger in a car that was pulled over on a traffic stop. The driver was ultimately arrested, and the car was towed. The car was searched and the Zastava semi-automatic pistol was discovered. Law enforcement arrested Johnson. Based on ballistic testing, the gun was determined to have been used in the attempted robbery of K.H.

Because Johnson has prior felony convictions, he is prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition at any time.

Johnson was sentenced today in U.S. District Court by Senior Judge David S. Doty. He pleaded guilty on December 7, 2023, to one count of felon in possession of a firearm.

This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Minneapolis Police Department, and the Fridley Police Department.
