White Earth chairman vows to protect and keep open the White Earth State Forest

DETROIT LAKES - The White Earth Nation wants to take over administration of the White Earth State Forest to preserve it far into the future.

White Earth Tribal Chairman Michael Fairbanks said the 160,000-acre state forest used to be much larger than it is now but has dwindled down to its current size as land was sold off over the years.

"The White Earth Forest used to be huge at one time," Fairbanks said in an interview. "Now it's half of what it used to be - the DNR sold it off."
