Northome/Kelliher finally overcomes Cass Lake-Bena in 3rd-straight 8A quarterfinal matchup

THIEF RIVER FALLS – The Northome/Kelliher girls basketball team had beaten Cass Lake-Bena four of the last five times the two teams had faced each other. But not in the game that meant the most.

Despite sweeping the Panthers in the last two regular seasons, the Mustangs were still smarting after losing 55-50 to CLB in last season's Section 8A quarterfinals.

Northome/Kelliher got another shot on Saturday in Thief River Falls, and this time, the Mustangs got it done. Facing Cass Lake-Bena in the 8A quarterfinals for the third consecutive season, the Mustangs finally surmounted their postseason rivals, earning a cathartic 73-69 win to advance to the section semifinals for the first time in decades.
