Corey Allen Nelson, Mizhaakiibines, Waazisii Clan, age 48, travelled to the spirit world in Ponemah, MN, on Thursday, February 8, 2024.

Corey was born on August 8, 1975, in Minneapolis, MN, to Dorothy Nelson and Bruce Miller-Dow Sr. He loved to play baseball and softball in his younger years. He graduated from Bemidji High School and became a firefighter for the forestry, travelling all over the United States fighting fires. Corey was currently taking college courses in Minneapolis, with the goal of teaching language and cultural studies to youth. He loved bringing his daughters to pow wows and was a woodland dancer all over the country for many years. Corey enjoyed traveling to new places and fishing. He was working on his fluency in Ojibwe, and passionate about learning and sharing culture with his daughters and family. Corey was always helpful with the sweat lodges and ceremonies. Corey will be remembered by his family as a fun loving goofball with a great sense of humor and always a smile on his face.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters: Gwendolyn Iceman, Tiarra Nelson, Addyson Johnson, Jennifer Nelson, Shalayna Nelson; grandson, Brycen Nelson; parents: Dorothy (Jack) Nelson and Bruce Miller-Dow Sr.; brothers: Justin (Debbie) Nelson, Bruce Dow Jr.; sisters: Kristine Nelson and Heather (Ahmed) Imam; nieces: Autumn, Lexie and Paige Nelson; nephews: Cody and Brody Nelson and Camren Mason; aunts and uncles: Roy (Arlys), Gary (Beverly), Paul (Phyllis), Anita Nelson, and Joyce, Olive (Kenny) and Edward Dow; his big pow wow family; as well as many cousins, other relatives and friends.

Those greeting him in the spirit world are: his wife, Orlene "Rae" Jones; paternal grandparents: Grover Miller-Dow and Irene Wilson; maternal grandmother, Naomi Cloud-Nelson; cousins: Barry Dow, Eric Dow, Arlene Brown; uncles: Herbert Nelson Sr., Eugene Dow, Dewayne Dow Sr.; aunts: Alvina Dow, Margaret Perkins; close friend, Ted Graves.

A traditional wake will begin at Noon on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the Ponemah Boys & Girls Club in Ponemah and continue until the service at 10AM on Thursday, February 15, 2024 with Zac Earley and Ty Stately as spiritual leaders. Active pallbearers will be: Cody Nelson, Justin Nelson, Tyson Nelson, Garrett Nelson, Carter Dow, Travis Dow, Vincent Dow, Gary Lee Nelson Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be: George Green his big pow wow family in Minneapolis and all over Indian Country, Rice Lake Friends of Bagley. Burial will be at the Dow Family Burial Grounds in Ponemah. Arrangements provided by Whispering Pines Funeral & Cremation Service of Walker & Hackensack, MN.
