DFL to introduce bill barring police from enforcing federal civil immigration law

ST. PAUL - The Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party will introduce a bill this session that will prohibit Minnesota's state and local law enforcement officials from acting to enforce federal civil immigration law.

"In these uncertain times, bold and decisive action to protect our immigrant communities is necessary," Sen. Omar Fateh, DFL-Minneapolis, said during a Thursday, Feb. 8, press conference at the Minnesota State Capitol. Fateh authored the bill with Rep. Sandra Feist, DFL-New Brighton.

The bill, known as the North STAR Act, is likely to be introduced on the first day of the session, Monday, Feb. 12. While the bill's language is not yet available, legislators said it is an update of a similar bill introduced last session that legislators and other stakeholders, including law enforcement, considered too broad.
