Derrick Francis Smith, "Giiwedinong Inini" (Northern Man), age 18, started his journey to the spirit world on Saturday, February 3, 2024 in Red Lake, Minnesota. He was born on October 27, 2005 to Jeremy Smith and Lindsay Johns in Bemidji, Minnesota.

He attended Red Lake Schools and St Mary's Mission School for part of grade school and middle school. He sang briefly with Little Bear, the High School Drum Group, and was a member of the Young Warrior Society. He was a St Mary's Mission School Brave in 2018. He was a youth worker for comp health and worked at the Red Lake C-Store. He liked gaming, hanging with friends and family, skateboarding, learning the culture, fishing and hunting. He loved to laugh and had a big smile always. He is deeply missed by everyone he came in contact with throughout his life.

Derrick is survived by his mom Lindsay Johns; dad Jeremy Smith and Jesse Ness; maternal grandparents Francis Brun and Simone Johns; paternal grandparents Linda and Gerald Lussier and John Smith Jr; great grandmother Ethel Smith; brothers Mason Schoenborn, Coby Schoenborn, Dion Smith, Cameron Smith, Braeden Smith; and sister Saige Smith.

He is preceded in death by Catherine Vanwert, Mary & Joseph Johns, Francis & Barbara Brun, John Smith Sr, brother Jeremy Smith Jr; aunts Emily and Elizabeth Johns, Gail Vanwert; cousins December Vanwert, Karris Barrett; uncles (namesake) Derrick Brun, Joseph Fairbanks, Todd Johns, Virgil Skinaway Jr; and numerous family members.

The wake will begin at 12 Noon on Thursday, February 8, 2024 at the Little Rock Center and continue until the service at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 10, 2024 with Fr. John Christianson officiating. Active Pallbearers will be Cameron Smith, Dion Smith, Mason Schoenborn, Coby Schoenborn, Xavier Mason, Francis Brun III, Zachary Johns, Carmine Beaulieu, Mikey May, Kendall Lussier, Ray Droulliard, Todd & Hallie Johns and Clayton Smith. Honorary Pallbearers will be Alexis Mason, Jesse Ness, Kali Johns, Jessie Cook, Khloe Lussier, Saige Smith, Kasey Mason, Donovan Medina, Mikail Sather, Grayson St. John, Terry Lussier, Vincent Skinaway, Estrella Bravo, Brandi Jourdain, Tia Johns, Great Aunts and Uncles, All Friends and Teachers. Burial will be at the Family Burial Grounds.
