Police: Shakopee hockey player suffered fatal injuries after driver of her car didn't stop at sign

The Shakopee High School girls hockey player who died in a two-vehicle collision was riding in a car whose driver failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by a larger vehicle with the right of way, police said Thursday.

Dan McCarvel posted on the CaringBridge website that his 17-year-old daughter, senior Mikayla McCarvel, died Tuesday night at HCMC. He indicated that she had suffered a brain injury.

The crash occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Dec. 26 at the intersection of County Road 21 and Tintaocanku, according to police.
