Matthew C. Morrison, age 31, of Ponemah began his journey to the Spirit World on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Matthew is the son of Lyle and Williamette (Hardy) Morrison.

Matthew loved basketball, he was a hard worker. He was a contractor and a roofer and he worked at the Border Patrol. He loved to sing and make his own music. He was so good at basketball that the Coaches played against him! He quit school and went to work at Youth Build and earned his GED and then went onto Red Lake Nation College. He was a helper in the South Minneapolis communities – checked in and took care of people. He loved people as whole. He was compassionate and had a big heart for everyone and even in hard times, he would make a joke out of it and turn it into a positive. There was no holding him down.

Matthew is survived by 6 children Micarli, Mattila, Matthew, Mani, Maggie and DeMichael; sisters Salina, Melody and Season; brother Anthony; mother Williamette Morrison; grandmother Elizabeth Kingbird; uncles Louis (Roberta) Kingbird Jr and Oriole (Vicky) Kingbird; special nephew/son Jonas Jenaro-Garcia Jr; Special Friend Angelica Pacheco; nieces Ryshayna, Rhianna, Juanita, Raquel, Chelsi, Natalie, Ataya, Nahstacia, Damita, Elayna, Amara, Rosa, Marisa, Lucia and Takayla, Kristan and Chelsea; nephews Frankie, Derrick, Francisco Jr and Dino, Edward III; Special Aunt Gayle Downwind; Special Guardian Gayle Knapp; and many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by father Lyle Morrison; grandpas Louis Kingbird Sr, William Hardy and Leo Gaye; grandma Leona Mackenzie; aunts Lucina Hardy and Maxine Hardy; nephews Benjamin, Francisco and Marcus; sisters Delma and Stacy; and cousins LaVan Stillday and Jacob Kingbird; and great-grandparents Andrew and Edith Sigana.

The wake will begin at 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at the Church of the Gichitwaa Kateri, 3045 Park Ave South, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55407. The wake will continue at 5:00 PM on Friday, December 8, 2023 at the Boys and Girls Club in Ponemah until the service at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 9, 2023 with Spiritual Leader Allen Hardy. Active Pallbearers are Darris Kingbird, Trevor Kingbird, Oriole Johnson, Nick Johnson, Travis Dow, Deion Burris, Andrew French, Aaron Cook. Honorary Pallbearers will be all family, friends and cousins. Burial will be at the Family Burial Grounds, Rabbit Point, Ponemah.
