August 29, 2023
This summer when the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service released the fiscal year 2022 Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payment error rates , it caused a stir from lawmakers working to craft the next farm bill.
The error rate in overpayments increased 4% from 2019 to 2022. Last year, the rate was 9.84% compared to 2019’s 6.18%. The national overpayment rate in 2022 was 9.84% while underpayments were 1.7%.
Alaska had the largest percentage of payment errors with almost 57%, and South Dakota and Idaho had the nation’s lowest overall payment error rates with 3.07% and 3.44% respectively.
