International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

Indigenous peoples from around the world were celebrated as Aug. 9 is recognized as International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples by the United Nations.
The date is recognized from the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982, according to the UN website.
Indigenous people make up less than 5 percent of the world’s population, with an estimated 476 million people living in 90 countries.
