TakeAction MN Celebrates Passage of Earned Sick and Safe Time in the Senate

St Paul, Minnesota — On Tuesday afternoon, the Minnesota Senate voted to pass the Jobs & Labor Omnibus bill, which includes the Earned Sick and Safe Time program that will mean all Minnesotans earn the paid sick days they need and deserve. This is a vital standard for making our state a place where all kids, workers, families, and communities are cared for and valued.

“This bill helps ensure no working Minnesotan has to choose between a paycheck and the time to care for themselves or a loved one,” said Majority Leader Kari Dziedzic in support of the Earned Sick and Safe Time provision in the Jobs and Labor Omnibus Bill.

This historic achievement marks the first time in history that the Earned Sick and Safe Time legislation has successfully passed the Senate, a significant milestone for worker protection and welfare in Minnesota.

“Working people, especially moms, caregivers, and hourly workers, kept their eye on the prize of winning Earned Sick and Safe Time for over a decade, and they built the momentum to win this crucial, commonsense labor standard,” said Elianne Farhat, Executive Director of TakeAction Minnesota. “We wouldn’t be here today without Majority Leader Kari Dziedzic, Senator Sandy Pappas, and other Senate lawmakers who championed this policy and stood up to corporate interests that sought to undermine it. Thanks to workers, advocates, community leaders, and elected officials across Minnesota, every worker in our state will soon have more dignity, health, and safety at work.”

This commonsense policy will improve countless Minnesotans' lives and make our state one of the best places for families. Earned Sick and Safe Time will allow workers to take time off to tend to their illnesses, care for a loved one, escape an unsafe situation, or recover from violence without fear of losing their job or income.
