Warmer temperatures help open up recreation areas across the Superior National Forest

Duluth, Minn., May 11, 2023-After a long and snowy winter, recreationalists are ready to start camping on the Superior National Forest. Whether you desire a rustic camping experience or prefer to use your RV, a variety of different types of camping are available. Please note, while most camping areas are open or opening soon, some may have limited amenities at this time. Access roads into camping areas may also still have snow or be muddy. In addition, be prepared to encounter down trees and debris. Please be patient as Superior staff open and maintain Forest recreation opportunities.

Current conditions for fee campgrounds on the Superior vary. On the east side of the Superior, Little Isabella, McDougal, and Divide Campgrounds are open but do not have water available at this time. Nine-mile Campground will be closed for this weekend due to heavy snow and wet conditions.

One the west side of the Superior, Pfeiffer Lake, Echo Lake, and Lake Jeanette Campgrounds are all open but no water service at this time.

Concessionaire campgrounds on Superior's eastside including Sawbill, Temperance River, Crescent, Trails End and Iron Lake are opening. Staff are still checking Flour, Bearskin, Kimball, Devil Track, and Two Island.

On the westside, Whiteface Reservoir opens on May 12, while Cadotte Lake will open May 26. Fall Lake, Fenske Lake, South Kawshiwi, and Birch Lake Campgrounds are all open with full amenities.

Rustic campgrounds opening for the weekend on the east side of the Superior include Harriet, Hogback, Fourmile, Tooey, Silver Island, and Baker. However, road conditions to access the sites vary with lingering snow. On the west side, Sand Lake Campground is open.

Lakes across the Superior are open or very close to opening. On the eastside, the Isabella and Tofte areas have open lakes, including McDougal and Baker. However, the mid-trail and upper Gunflint area lake may not be open by the weekend. On the west side of the Superior, all lakes up the Echo Trail and Fernberg area are ice and snow free. There may still be ice on portions of Lac La Croix Lake.
