Hastings school district looks to privatize food service after workers' strike

The district is exploring hiring an outside company to serve school meals

The Hastings school district is looking to hire a private company to serve school meals just six weeks after settling a strike with the district's food service workers.

"The district learned ... over the course of the recent strike, that it may be able to realize cost savings and greater efficiencies by exploring potential outsourcing or alternative structures for how it handles food service," the district said in a news release.

The school board directed district administrators on April 12 to seek proposals from food service companies, the release said.

Very strange that the school board believes they can save money on food service when the next school year it will be free lunch for all and more than likely funded by the state. It sounds like retaliation to the workers for striking and trying to reject the districts offer. And why is Bob McDowell even part of this when he does not work for us anymore. School board members should be next to leave. Hastings vote NO in November.
