Alaina Marie DeFoe-Shofner

April 13, 1967 - March 4, 2023

Alaina DeFoe-Shofner, (Memengwaa Ike- "Butterfly Woman") passed peacefully on Saturday, March 4th, 2023, at St. Luke's Hospital. She was born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota and currently lived on the Fond du Lac reservation with her husband John and her cats. She was a proud member of the Fond du Lac Ojibwe Tribe. She graduated from Duluth Denfeld High School and took college photography classes in the Twin Cities. Alaina provided many years of service to the Fond Du Lac Reservation including positions in the Human Resources Department and as a slot Supervisor at Black Bear Casino. In the last 5 years she has been able to spend time with her husband in the garden and watch football "GO VIKINGS". She was passionate about gardening, butterflies, hummingbirds, and the outdoors. Alaina enjoyed her trips on the motorcycle with her husband and four wheeling around her yard. She was a caring, thoughtful, and a generous person who loved to get to know people and help whenever she could. She was quick to offer a joke or smart remark when trying to smooth any situation out. Alaina will be remembered for her laugh and smile as well as her feisty "I can do it myself" attitude.

Alaina is preceded in death by her sister, Dawn; brother, Dion; mother, Judith; and father, Francis. She is survived by husband, John; son, Cody; stepdaughters, Johnna and Amber; stepson, Jesse; four step-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and family.

Services will be held Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet with a visitation from 11:00 a.m. until the 12:00 Noon Memorial Service. A luncheon will follow in the Fellowship Room.
