Red Lake Warriors slip by Deer River 75-73 in exciting first game of 2023 - P2

Red Lake JV battles in 63-53 loss to Deer River in early game

The Red Lake Warriors hosted the Deer River Warriors on Tuesday, January 4, 2023, taking a 40-35 halftime lead and edging Deer River in the final 4.2 seconds of the game, 75-73.

Red Lake trailed 69-71 with about 50 seconds on the clock and went ahead 72-71 with a 3-pointer by Ken Fox. Deer River missed their attempt at a 3, got the rebound, but turned it back over to Red Lake, followed by a foul on their breakaway. Red Lake made 1 of 2 free-throws and with the clock winding down, tied the game once again with a layup at the 4.2 second mark. With the score tied at 73-73, Gerald Kingbird Jr. went coast-to-coast and nailed his shot near the paint, off the backboard, for the buzzer-beater win.

Cade Beaulieu led the Warriors with 17 points, Gerald Kingbird Jr. added 16 and Jack Brown nailed 15.

Caiden Schjenken led Deer River with 21 points, Rhett Mundt hit for 19, Ethan Willians had 14 and Cole Jackson netted 11.

It was a hard fought battle right from the start, with several lead changes and neither team able to hold on to the lead. Once down, both teams would come right back to stay in it.

Red Lake improved to 5-1 on the season, while Deer River dropped to 7-2.

The Warriors travel to Walker-Hackensack-Akley on January 5th, Nevis on January 10th and host Laporte on January 13th.
