RED LAKE NATION FIRE DEPARTMENT

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Perform a variety of administrative, technical and supervisory work in planning, organizing, directing and implementing fire prevention and fire protection for the Red Lake Reservation, Reports to Executive Administrator. Full time position with benefits. Salary; DOQ

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

• Ultimately responsible for overall operation of the Fire Department and the supervision of its employees

• Directs, plans, coordinates, supervises, evaluates and establishes rules and regulations for fire operations, designs policies and procedures for fire protection and develops goals for the Fire Department

• Responds to alarms and may assume command of activities at the scene of major emergencies, as required; directs the investigation of fires as soon as possible after they occur

• If requested, directs the inspection of buildings and other properties for hire hazards and offers assistance with the enforcement of prevention ordinances

• Provides assistance and interpretation of department policies, activities, and procedures; represents the Fire Department when conferring with other governmental officials and members of the public

• Directs the release of information and acts as the Public Information Officer for the Fire Department

• Supervises and coordinates the preparation of an annual budget for the Fire Department; directs the implementation of the department's budget and plans for and reviews specifications for capital improvements and new or replaced equipment

• Recommends the purchase, maintenance, repair, improvement and/or replacement of Fire Department properties, equipment and supplies

• Responsible for approving and signing all invoices, travel request, purchase orders and any other documents pertaining to Fire Department business

• Must attend monthly director's meetings and other meetings related to the Fire Department

• Must prepare monthly reports which include fire/accident calls and other activities of the Fire Department

• Responsible for preparing annual employee evaluations

• Performs as the Emergency Manager during a disaster; prepares specifications, placement and purchasing of the emergency warning siren system

• Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

• B.A. Degree in Fire Science or two to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

• Possess thorough knowledge of modern fire suppression, fire prevention, hazardous materials and emergency medical services principles, procedures, procedures, techniques and equipment

• Knowledgeable of first aid and resuscitation techniques and their application

• Skill in the operation of the necessary tools and equipment, including fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses, ladders, other standard firefighting equipment, first aid equipment, and radio

• Knowledgeable of the geography of the Reservation's four communities and surrounding areas

• Ability to train and supervise employees

• Ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and in making decisions

• General knowledge of computer operations

• Possess the appropriate licenses needed for the operation of specific types of fire vehicles and a combination of mechanical experience

• Have the ability to push, pull, or lift over 50+ pounds

• Employment is contingent upon successfully passing Pre-Employment Drug/Alcohol Test and Background check
