Belva’s body will be taken to Wakpala, South Dakota for a graveside service at the Long Hill Cemetery, Wakpala on Saturday, October 1, 2022.

Belva C. Greyhorn was born on May 31, 1938 at the Birdhorse ranch, rural Wakpala, South Dakota, the daughter of Alice (Flexible) and Robert Birdhorse. She grew up in a one room log house out in the country where she loved riding her horses and worked hard just like a man right along side her Dad.

She graduated from Wakpala High School in 1958. After graduating she attended Haskell Indian Nations University in 1959, then Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota in the year 1960. In 1961, Belva moved back home and started working at a bowling alley in Fort Yates, North Dakota where she met her first husband Lynn D. Lawrence. From that marriage she had four children, two boys that she has now joined in the Spirit World plus two daughters. Belva then met and married Vincent Greyhorn Sr. in the year 1977. From this marriage she added another son who she also joins in the Spirit World and another daughter.

Belva also helped the community out by babysitting for different ones. She also opened her home to foster children. She helped raise different individuals whether they were family members or not. After losing their mother she kept and raised her younger brother Kermit BirdHorse until his death in 2006. She was also employed at Sioux Manufacturing for more than a few years until she had to quit due to health reasons.

Belva also had a younger sister Roberta that she would refer to on occasion for advice. She would say “I called Berda and asked her about it.” Berda also looked up to her “big sister” Belva.

Our Beautiful, Precious, Mother was our “Queen”. She was Loved and Treasured by each and everyone of her family members. She will be deeply, deeply missed by all. We Love You Mom!

She enjoyed being around her whole family when there was some type of gathering. We would all have a big feast with plenty, plenty of food. That is what our dear mother always made sure that there was a lot of food, made with love. She liked watching her Little House on the Prairie, Gunsmoke, Andy Griffith and Matlock.
