White Earth Reservation Business Committee opposes railroad mergers

WHITE EARTH, MINN. – Canadian Pacific Railways and Kansas City Southern Railways are currently in the process of merging their operations. If the merger is approved, it will lead to an increase in rail traffic through White Earth Reservation. Many of these trains will be carrying crude oil and other hazardous materials.

Canadian Pacific is already the largest shipper of oil through Minnesota and this merger will significantly increase the volume of oil that moves through our reservation and state. This could lead to potential environmental impacts due to the increased rail traffic with potentially harmful materials being freighted throughout Minnesota alongside our most precious clean water resources.

The White Earth Reservation Business Committee opposes this merger. Increased traffic could delay emergency service to our Mahnomen Health Center. The Surface Transportation Board (STB) is having a public comment period with a virtual meeting on

Monday, September 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. Community members can pre-register for comments or find the link to join the meeting at https://www.cp-kcsmergereis.com/involvement.htm
