U.S. News & World Report Ranks Bemidji State University Amongst Midwest's Top 100

In its America’s Best Colleges 2023 rankings, released September 12, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Bemidji State University amongst the top 100 master’s universities in the Midwest region and tied for 26th in the region amongst public institutions.

Now in its 38th year, the U.S. News & World Report evaluates schools on hundreds of data points using up to 17 measures of academic quality.

Regional universities offer a full range of undergrad programs with some master’s programs but few, if any, doctoral programs. The Midwest region includes institutions in North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. BSU tied with five other institutions for 89th place in the overall regional rankings, and tied for 26th amongst public institutions in the region. It

BSU’s #20 regional ranking for “best undergraduate teaching” was tied for the best among all public universities in Minnesota. Winona State University and Minnesota State University - Mankato were also tied at #20.

BSU has appeared on the U.S. News list of the Midwest region’s top universities each year since 2009. U.S. News & World Report’s rankings categorize schools based on mission according to classifications developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and, in some cases, by geography.

In addition to the overall regional ranking, BSU also appeared in several additional rankings published by U.S. News & World Reports, including:

• 20th in the Midwest region in “Best Undergraduate Teaching,” a peer-review score which rates schools on the quality of their teaching to undergraduate students. It is the first time BSU has appeared on this list.

• tied for 19th on the Midwest region’s “least debt” list.

• tied for 56th in the Midwest region in social mobility, which measures a school’s effectiveness at graduating students who are eligible for Pell grants.

BSU also made its first appearance on the publication’s “best bachelor of science in nursing” rankings, which ranked 681 programs nationally. BSU tied with 63 other schools for 413th place. This ranking is based entirely on peer review scores.

U.S. News & World Report began publishing college rankings in 1983. America’s Best Colleges 2023 is online now and the print version will be available on newsstands later this month.

The information presented by the U.S. News & World Report America’s Best Colleges rankings and directory was collected during the spring and summer of 2022 via the publication’s annual online statistical survey of colleges. A complete explanation of the publication’s methodology for determining school rankings is available on its website.
