Reacts to nomination of first director of new Minneapolis Department of Public Safety
July 8, 2022
JULY 7, 2022 (SAINT PAUL) — Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison today issued the following statement in the wake of the nomination of Dr. Cedric Alexander to be the first director of the new City of Minneapolis Department of Public Safety:
I support Minneapolis’ new Department of Public Safety and I support Dr. Alexander’s vision that Minneapolis “has the opportunity more than anything else to be the new brand of what policing looks like in America.” Dr. Alexander understands true public safety cannot exist without accountability and respect. He understands we must meet people’s expectations that police will help keep their communities safe by policing lawfully, constitutionally, and respectfully. He further understands it is past time for new standards of policing that are essential for building trust. Dr. Alexander will make an excellent addition and I look forward to working with him.
