Minnesota Boys High School Volleyball state tournament scheduled for June 15-16 in Shakopee

Tournament to be first major boys volleyball event since the Minnesota State High School League rejected popular proposal to sanction the sport

Shakopee, Minn. — Members of the press are invited to attend the Minnesota Boys High School Volleyball Association’s state tournament on Wednesday, June 15 and Thursday, June 16 at Shakopee High School. This will be the state’s first major boys high school volleyball event since the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) rejected a popular proposal to sanction the sport in May.

“The result of last month’s vote was difficult for Minnesota’s volleyball community – but we remain committed to the schools, players and their families,” said Director and President of the Minnesota Boys High School Volleyball Association, Jenny Kilkelly. “This state tournament is an opportunity to showcase the incredible talent, passion and diversity of the hundreds of student athletes who participate in boys volleyball across Minnesota. We can’t wait!”

The Minnesota Boys High School Volleyball Association has more than 100 teams and 1,400 athletes in Minnesota. Across the country, 30 other states already offer boys high school volleyball as an official recognized sport and are supported by their local high school leagues.

Despite the tremendous growth and popularity of the sport, the MSHSL once more denied a proposal to sanction the sport for a fourth time in May 2022 – even after acknowledging the enormous opportunities boys high school volleyball has provided for student athletes in their high school communities.
