Roberta “Berta” Ann Smith, age 84, of Red Lake, MN, passed away surrounded by her family on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center in Bemidji, MN.

Berta was born on January 22, 1938, to Allen and Martha (Sayers) Brun in Red Lake, MN. She attended school in Red Lake. She worked in the custodial department at IHS in a career that spanned over 20 years. Berta took pride in her work and something wasn’t “clean” until she cleaned it! She enjoyed going to the casino to try her luck at the slots and Keno. She was spunky and held nothing back if she saw something or someone that needed correction. As tiny as she was, Berta had a big heart. She loved her great-grandchildren and spoiled them with love and attention every chance she had.

Berta will be lovingly remembered by her son, Donald “Donnie Bo”; foster daughter, Susan “Suzie” Iceman; special nieces: Marilyn “Peach” Graves and Beth Beaulieu; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren as well as numerous other relatives and many special friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry Smith; brothers: Francis “Chunky” Brun, James “Jimmy Boy” Brun, Donald “Bo” Brun; sister, Marilyn “Girlie” King; great-grandchildren: Aubrey Brun, Floyd Otto Iceman, Jr., Robert Andrew Iceman, Louie Iceman; and her beloved Pomeranian dog, Rudy.

The wake will begin with a procession at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, April 28, 2022, from the reservation line on Hwy 89 to the Red Lake Center in Red Lake and continue until the service at 1 :00 P.M. on Friday, April 29, 2022. Father John Christianson will be officiating. Active casketbearers will be: Donald Brun, Micah Brun, Dan Brun, Kenneth Brun, Aaron Beaulieu, Kevin Spears and Alden Beaulieu, Jr. Alternates will be: Riley Chaboyea and Donnie Bo Brun. Honorary casketbearers will be: Diane Roy, Lorraine Chaboyea, Donna Sumner, Joyce Batdorf, Patty Beaulieu, Shrileen King, Michelle Johns, Vivian Clark, Mary Ellen Cook, Fabian “Nickel” Cook, Jimmy King, Vicki Stately, Mary Omen, Kathy Brun, Lindsey Johns, Gabriella Brun; Alysha Beaulieu, Georgianna Spears, Gerald Spears; Sydney Beaulieu, Cheryl Stately and Darcy Brun.
