Captain Jason Riggs of the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office announces his candidacy for Beltrami County Sheriff

Bemidji, MN – With over 21 years of Minnesota Law Enforcement experience, Captain Jason Riggs announced that he will seek the Office of Beltrami County Sheriff.

Jason Riggs has served the past 3 years as Field Operations Captain and a total of 18 years with the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office. His service to the Country, State of Minnesota and his communities are exemplary and are as follows:

Military Service

• United States Navy (Gulf War) 1991 to 1996

• Minnesota Army National Guard (C co 2/136) 1996 to 2001

Minnesota Law Enforcement

• Deer River Police Department, Police Officer 2001 to 2002

• Leech Lake Police Department, Police Officer 2002 to 2002 (6 months)

• Blackduck Police Department, Police Chief 2002 to 2004

• Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Sheriff 2004 to 2010

• Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant 2010 to 2019

• Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, Captain 2019 to Present

• Headwaters SWAT team, 2003 to Present

• Headwaters SWAT team, Commander 2012 to Present

Public Office

• Blackduck City Council, Councilman

• Blackduck City Council, Mayor


• Minnesota Youth Firearms Safety, Firearms Instructor

• Royal Rangers ministry, Youth Leader

Jason Riggs has held a number of supervisory positions within Law Enforcement, the Military, Local Government and the Private Sector. He is a Leader within the Law Enforcement profession and a recognizable name and Leader within the community.

Captain Riggs attended the 247th session of the FBI National Academy in 2011 of which less than five percent of Law Enforcement leaders are able to attend. Captain Riggs follows in the footsteps of former Beltrami County Sheriff’s; Phil Hodapp, Tom Tolman, John Cahill and former Chief Deputy Ron Otterstad.

Statement from Captain Jason Riggs:

I have been fortunate in my Law Enforcement career to have been mentored by so many excellent men and women. I am seeking the Office of Beltrami County Sheriff for one reason, “To serve”. I value my community and its people and I believe they deserve a quality leader who will stand with them to make Beltrami County a safer place to live, work and thrive. I look forward to meeting with the great citizens of this county and beyond to discuss my plans to make Beltrami County communities safer by including area leaders in problem solving and educating our area youth to make healthy and positive life choices, which in turn will result in the next generation of community leaders.
