Driver's licenses would last 8 years under Minnesota Senate proposal

Companion legislation would double current application fees

ST. PAUL — A slate of proposals in the Minnesota Legislature aimed at overhauling driver vehicle services would double the time licenses are valid, increase ID card application fees, and direct the public safety department to explore digital options for driver and vehicle documents.

Presently, a Minnesota driver's license must be renewed after four years, with the expiration date set as the holder’s birthday. A bill in the Senate would extend that period to eight years. Another proposal would increase license application fees from 8 to 16 for REAL ID-compliant licenses. Noncompliant license fees would be $11.

Republicans in the Senate have made it a priority to overhaul state driver vehicle services this session after the completion of an independent review requested by the Legislature last year. The group of bills on the proposed changes got a hearing Thursday, March 3, in the Senate transportation and passed with bipartisan support. Transportation Chair Sen. Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, said the plan is to pass the proposals as a “mini” omnibus bill.
