Loretta Sayers

Loretta Sayers

August 3, 1945 ~ February 21, 2022 (age 76)

Loretta Sayers, age 76, of Walker, MN, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her friends and caregivers who loved her dearly.

Not much is known of Loretta's younger years. Loretta was part of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, and what Loretta did know and understand was that she was Native American, as she demonstrated this daily with her respect she gave others, once she felt comfortable with you, she claimed you and you were Loretta's forever.

It would be very easy to be sad at this time and there is no doubt, that we are going to miss: "errr-I want coffee" "errr-I want doughnuts" "errr-I want treats", or an all time favorite: "Loretta-eat your vegetables – NO-errr". What this does make me think about is Loretta is with The Creator at his/her table and I start thinking; " You talk about someone who better have their A-GAME ready, as we all know Loretta will have hers".

In the early 1990's Loretta moved to Walker becoming one of the first people to live at Northstar-Walker. Later, along with her housemates, moved into a brand-new house on the back nine of Longbow Golf Course as REM-Walker.

In sitting down to write this about Loretta, I dug deep into my; "Book of Loretta" and came across a hand printed eval on her before coming to Walker. In it, Loretta scored high in the following areas: Rebellious Behavior, Untrustworthy Behavior, Withdrawn. In knowing Loretta for 30 years, these are not behaviors, but more of testing you, her letting you know that she was in charge and what are you going to do to make us both happy!

Rebellious Behavior: Loretta was very clear and loud letting you know her likes/dislikes

Untrustworthy Behavior: Loretta taught all of us, keep your drinks/snacks up high and out of her reach

Withdrawn: When there was not a clear choice on like/dislike, Loretta weighed her options/took her time

Loretta started work at The Northern Cass DAC: 5-3-95 and retired: 12-23-15. Loretta started back at the DAC: 5-1-16 attending 1 day a week, on 7-1-16 Loretta started to come on Tuesdays/Thursdays and Special Event Days. In November-2016 (after receiving a letter from one of her home staff stating; "I do not know how Loretta sleeps at night, we put her to bed and all you hear is, I want to go to the DAC"). Loretta started back fulltime, becoming our (DAC-Ambassador) for visitors who came to see us or while we were out in the community. Loretta continued in this role up until present day. These past couple of months Loretta's home staff not only did an outstanding job taking care of her, but when they knew we needed our Ambassador for special events, they made sure she was ready!

I am pretty sure at this time Loretta would say: "Err-Thank you, for coming-err Lets have some doughnuts, coffee and treats-errr".

A time of sharing and celebration of Loretta's life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at Whispering Pines Funeral Home, Hackensack location, 3695 Autumn Loop, NW, Hackensack. Burial will be near her mother at Old Agency Cemetery in Onigum, MN. Arrangements provided by Whispering Pines Funeral & Cremation Service (www.whisperingpinesnorth.com).
