Minnesota GOP Gubernatorial Candidates are Wrong on Reproductive Rights

With abortion rights at risk in the Supreme Court, candidates' support of radical abortion bans is especially dangerous for Minnesota

MINNESOTA - Saturday, January 22 marks the anniversary of the Supreme Court's landmark decision in Roe v. Wade. With the Supreme Court's conservative majority seizing the opportunity to challenge the right to abortion, conservatives in Minnesota need to be held accountable for the anti-choice policies they threaten to bring to the state.

"Every conservative Minnesota governor candidate, including Paul Gazelka, Scott Jensen, Kendall Qualls, and Michelle Benson supports restricting access to safe, legal abortion," said Marissa Luna, Executive Director of Alliance for a Better Minnesota. "Abortion is essential health care. With Roe v. Wade in jeopardy, Minnesota needs leaders who will protect our reproductive freedom at the state level, not conservatives who want to steal our right to choose."

In December 2021, at the latest conservative gubernatorial debate, all the conservative candidates committed to restricting abortion access if elected.

Paul Gazelka, Michelle Benson, and Scott Jensen have a long anti-choice record in the state Senate.

In 2013, Gazelka and Benson both voted to exclude coverage of abortion services from all policies sold through the health insurance exchange, now known as MNsure.

In 2017, all three candidates supported dangerous legislation with restrictive licensing guidelines for abortion facilities.

In 2019, Gazelka and Benson cosponsored an abortion-busting bill that introduced a 20-week abortion ban. Jensen voted in favor of the ban.
