John Franklin Sumner, Jr.

August 5, 1968 ~ January 15, 2022 (age 53)

John Franklin Sumner, Jr., age 53, of the Eagle Clan, passed away at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN, on Saturday, January 15, 2022.

John was born on August 5, 1968, in Red Lake, Minnesota, to John and Donna (Hanson) Sumner Sr. He lived in Red Lake all his life, graduating from high school and enjoying the home he had for many years. John was a helper of others and decided to attend CNA and TMA classes in order to help those in nursing homes. He was a very likable and enjoyable person and was known by a lot of people. John enjoyed gardening and playing softball, often traveling to play in tournaments, but his special love was cooking, and he was good at it. When he moved to Minneapolis a few years ago, he made a lot of new friends, especially in neighboring apartments. One of his favorite things was cooking for his neighbors and family, often inviting them in for dinner or even delivering meals to them. In expressing their feelings of loss, they remember him as a humorous and happy-go-lucky guy, always helping others with his door open, and reminiscing about the old days.

John was preceded in death by his father John Sumner, Sr.; sister Lynette Sumner Hill; brothers Donald Sumner, Sr. and Anthony Hanson; grandparents Harry Hanson, Sr. and Lorena Hanson. He will be greatly missed by his mother Donna Sumner; sisters Farrah Nelson, Sharon Sumner, and Janet Stillday; brother Darwin Sumner, and numerous nieces and nephews and other family members.

A wake for John will begin on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at 2:00pm, at the old Red Lake Center with Fr. Jerry Rogers officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Sumner, Chris Sumner, Willy May, Jordan Neadeau, Claude Neadeau Jr., and Cody Roberts. Alternates will be Lydell Neadeau and Devin Sumner. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Jeremy Holstein, Donald "Pro" Blue, Brad Blue, Lee G. Neadeau, Donald Sumner Jr., Patrick Stillday Jr., Shieleen Omen, Lisa Sumner, Cheryl Wind, Renee Spears, Deb Hawthorne, Gina King, and Sylvia Almaguer. John will be laid to rest at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in the spring.
