Department of Employment and Economic Development Awards 5 Transportation Economic Development Infrastructure Programs Across Minnesota

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Today, the Department of Employment and Economic Development announced 5 Transportation and Economic Development Infrastructure (TEDI) projects across Minnesota. The program targets transportation infrastructure projects that create economic development opportunities and jobs, through a collaboration between MnDOT, DEED, and local government and private sector partners.

"This investment in transportation projects will broaden economic development possibilities," said DEED Commissioner Steve Grove. "These projects will retain or create more than 3,000 jobs while improving critical pathways to businesses and opportunities in communities across Minnesota."

2021 TEDI Awards

• City of Dayton ($1,000,000) - Assist with construction of a four-lane divided highway linking the new interchange on Interstate 94 to the central part of Dayton. I-94 in this part of the state is one of the busiest freeways in the state (95,000 vehicles per day). The new interchange will provide a new option for traffic that currently goes through the very busy Highway 101 interchange. The project will assist in creating and retaining 1,455 jobs in the area at businesses like Graco, Inc., CRG, Zeigler CAT, ICA Corporation, King Solutions, and others. Tax base increase is estimated at $134 million in five years. Total cost of the public infrastructure project is estimated to be $4.57 million.

• City of Chaska ($487,600) - Construction of roadway and sewer along Creek Road to allow full buildout of the 360 acre Southwest Chaska Business Park. The project estimates 5,906 new jobs and a tax base increase of $46 million in the next 5 years. Oppidan, a developer, has committed to the first development of a $10.5 million building that will create 301 jobs. The total cost of the infrastructure project is $14.2 million.

• Renville County - ($200,000) - Reconstruct 3 miles of roadway that will primarily serve the Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative, Renville County's largest employer. The project will create a wider concrete roadway that will increase safety for the roadway that has high truck traffic. The cooperative is planning a $175 million expansion. Businesses along the reconstructed road will create or retain 642 jobs and estimate a tax base increase of $40 million in five years. Total cost of the public infrastructure project is $2,840,900.

• McLeod County ($750,000) - Extend County Road 5 through a business park in Winsted. The project will expand and provide better access to the existing business park. The expansion will provide 120 additional acres in the park and provide better access to existing businesses such as Millerbernd Manufacturing and RAM. Those two businesses will retain and create 625 jobs and increase tax base by $28 million in 5 years.

• Big Stone County ($462,400) - Construct a roadway that will allow trucks direct access to Highway 75 and bypass residential streets in Clinton. The project will primarily serve CHS, Big Stone Lumberyard, and the Wheaton Dumont Co-op Elevator. The Elevator was destroyed by a fire in 2021. The businesses will create or retain 35 jobs and increase tax base by $1.5 million in 5 years.

The TEDI Program is a collaborative effort between the Minnesota Department of Transportation. TEDI funds may be used for projects outside of MnDOT rights of way, that will create and retain jobs and increase economic opportunities.
