Giiwedin Biindige

February 12, 1940 ~ December 13, 2021 (age 81)

Giiwedin Biindige peacefully began his spirit journey on December 13, 2021. He is survived by his wife Erma, children Debra (Brent), Jeanni, Kurt, Tami (Vance), Jon (Melissa), Derick (Todd), Melanie (Desmond), and Joe. He also leaves behind many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and countless family and friends whom he loved very much.

Giiwedin was born in Federal Dam to Guy and Rachel on February 12th, 1940. He spent almost his entire life living near his beloved Leech Lake. As a young man he developed a passion for working with horses and playing guitar. Giiwedin spent his life fostering these passions and became a world class horse breeder and trainer and a professional musician. He was a talented artist and loved drawing and carving antlers.

More than anything, Giiwedin loved his connection to his cultural beliefs and his practice of becoming a respected member of his Midewewin Lodge. He loved practicing and sharing the teachings of his Anishinaabe people. He spent the majority of his time engaging in the native traditions of hunting and netting. More than the activities, he enjoyed sharing his harvest with friends and family.

Giiwedin will be missed for his sense of humor, generosity, kindness and delicious nanoob (soup). His love for music, art and Anishinaabe culture will never be forgotten.
